Bill said his family was poor and he always knew he’d be a worker. But his daughter Danae said her dad exposed her and her siblings to free adventures like driving to Marin to watch fall leaves turn color or hitchhiking to the wine country. “When you think about our life and not having anything really, it never really mattered. He never let it matter.”

A big part of Bill’s political analysis revolved around class-consciousness and an appreciation for all people. Bill’s son Joaquin said, “I’ve seen my dad around heavy duty business people. He doesn’t treat them any more special than anybody else. He doesn’t switch it up depending on if you have a suit or you’re a dude on the street.”
