The donor categories are named for thriving hubs of activity which were important gathering places in Manilatown. One of the most famous locations in San Francisco from the 50s to the 70s, in space now occupied by the Manitown Center, the hungry 'i' --short for hungry intellectual-- was an eclectic nightclub where artists from Barbra Streisand to Bill Cosby performed. Mabuhay Circle is for a restaurant that reminded the manongs of home. Silver Wing was also a restaurant known for its inexpensive food and large tables where young activists could have a good meal and a lively meeting. Tino, sometimes known as the Mayor of Manilatown, would give advice and share news from home at his barbershop/pool hall. Club Mandalay was also a nightclub below the old International Hotel, space now occpied by the Manilatown Center.

The brick portraits are from the foundation bricks from the original International Hotel. They represent reverence for the past and a hope for a better life. These walls acknowledge the generous contributions of the donors who helped make the Manilatown Center a reality. They symbolize heritage as a legacy--something that is passed from generation to generation.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
I-Hotel Manilatown Center is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help out in array of different activities. In the events section, volunteers are needed to help out in setting up and working for events. This includes setting up and working audio/video equipment (mixer, speakers, wires, mics, projector, and DVD player) and food.

Along with set-up, events require facilitation and documentation with proper training. Facilitation requires watching the door and attending the donation table. Documentation includes helping out with filming and picture taking with proper training. The historical archiving section includes digitizing a variety of different materials pertaining to the history of Manilatown and the struggle for fair housing. This includes scanning historic articles, digitizing old audio/video tapes, scanning photos, and entering it in a database. In the near future we are going to have this be accessible through the web. With our website in it's early stages, HTTP experienced volunteers are encouraged to help (optional).

The outreach or social marketing section consists of helping out with producing fliers, newsletters, and invitations (training is provided). Along with these tasks, distributing the outreach to targeted areas. Examples of outreach areas are universities, cultural centers, other non-profits, and targeted neighborhoods.

The Manilatown CA Archival Project Needs Your Help! The archive team is embarking on an Archive Identification Project. We are trying to identify the donors, photographers, individuals and signifance of photos within Manilatown's I-Hotel collection. We hope to gather information and insight from people who know the history of these photos. Look out for our table during upcoming community events. For more info contact Ellen-Rae Cachola, Archival Coordinator @ ellenrae@manilatown.org
