I-hotel mandala workshop with nancy hom
Join Nancy Hom for a creative mandala workshop where you can create and explore your artistic side while honoring the legacy of the I-Hotel.
Manilatown Heritage Foundation is pleased to welcome back Nancy Hom, a mandala installation artist and longtime supporter of the International Hotel, who will be creating a 6-foot floor mandala to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the International Hotel Manilatown Center.
It will premiere on October 25, 5-8 pm, and be on view during gallery hours through November 30th.
The I-Hotel was more than a hotel; it was a cultural hub, a clearinghouse, and a place to call home for the mostly elderly Filipinos who lived there. The tenants, including the community organizations on the ground floor, fought valiantly for low-income housing until their brutal eviction in 1977. Photos of events in both the past I-Hotel and the new International Hotel Manilatown Center will be shown in the mandala, as well as fabricated items that reflect the cultural activities at the Center.
We invite the Manilatown community and anyone with a connection to the I-Hotel past and/or present to make some of these items for the mandala. There will be two workshops on October 5th and October 12th, 2-5 pm. We will make 4” round mini parols out of markers, paint, paper cutouts, and collage. The 4”x6” horizontal cards, also done the same way, should express what the I-Hotel and the Manilatown Center mean to you. Materials will be provided. Come and be part of the mandala.
In 2015, Nancy produced the 12-foot "Soul of San Francisco" floor mandala. Some of you may have seen it at the International Hotel Manilatown Center. We look forward to seeing you at one or both of the workshops. If you would like to create a parol or card but can’t make it on those dates, please get in touch with Nancy at nancyhomarts@gmail.com
