Introduction to ilokano dance

Postcard for Beginning Ilokano Dance

Join us to experience the profound emotion and cultural richness of Ilokano dance and music traditions.

Ilokano dance and music reflect the rich cultural traditions of the Ilokano people of northern Luzon in the Philippines. Traditional Ilokano dances often express themes of courtship, rural life, and community celebration, featuring movements and techniques that are integral to Philippine Folk Dance aesthetics.

In this workshop, you will learn a dance set to the Ilokano song “Dungdungwen Kanto”, a well-known lullaby and courtship song that is part of the Ilokano music heritage. The title translates as "I Will Love You," and the lyrics express tender affection and longing. With lyrics and tone reminiscent of a lullaby, “Dungdungwen Kanto” has evolved into a love song for serenades, often sung at weddings, capturing the heartfelt emotions of romantic devotion. Its gentle melody and poetic lyrics continue to resonate with Ilokanos and reflect the deep sentimentality embedded in their musical and dance traditions.
