Teduray Interlocking Rhythms + Magasik Dance
Saturday, October 17, 2026 • 2:00 PM
International Hotel Manilatown Center
868 Kearny Street, San Francisco
Manilatown Academy invites you to learn, listen, play, and move with Manilatown Ancestral.
In this hands-on beginner workshop, participants will be introduced to Ka’atung, an interlocking gong tradition of the Teduray people of Mindanao, Philippines, together with Magasik, the social dance performed with the music.
Rather than simply watching a demonstration, participants will learn by doing. Together, we’ll explore how individual rhythmic patterns interlock, how musicians listen and respond to one another, and how music and movement come together as a shared community practice.
No previous musical or dance experience is necessary. Whether you are reconnecting with Philippine cultural traditions, encountering these practices for the first time, or simply curious to learn, people of all backgrounds and generations are warmly welcome.
Learning Living Traditions Together
Manilatown Ancestral creates opportunities to experience Philippine traditional arts through participation—playing, dancing, listening, and learning together in community.
Our workshops approach these traditions not as something belonging only to the past, but as living cultural practices carried forward through teaching, practice, relationship, and intergenerational exchange.
Tickets & Community Access
Free Community Tickets are available. We want everyone who wishes to participate to join us, and no purchase is required to attend.
Those who would like to help sustain Manilatown Ancestral may choose a $5, $35, or $45 Supporter Ticket. Supporter tickets include special Manilatown thank-you gifts, with gifts varying by contribution level.
